How bad are the S.F. Giants?

By Gary D | April 8, 2008

Things are going utterly horrible for the  feeble Giants, and west bay area baseball fans can expect to see more dismally dissapointing play for the remainder of the MLB season. Brian Sabean attempted to restore dignity to San Francisco by building the team around pitching, speed, and defense…the concept is failing miserably. The pitching department has two very bright spots indeed between Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum, as well as scarcely opportune closer Brian Wilson, but big bread-winner Barry Zito is further cementing his status as a flop in a Giants uniform. The opening day starter has surrendered 3 HR, and recorded only 4 K’s in 10 innings, while allowing a .381 opponent’s avg, with earned run avg. of 6.30. Kevin Correia and Jon Sanchez, the Giants’ fourth and fifth starters, have been hammered by opposing bats in the early going. The Bonds-less Giants’ offseason aquisition of Aaron Rowand is looking solid, as he is batting a club-leading .375, but the second highest avg. on the squad belongs to Eugenio Valdez at an unstellar .275 clip. The Giants as a team are batting a less than modest .217, compared to opponents’ .325 avg., and the humm-babies have just 2 HR, while the pitching staff has already given up 8 longballs. With Benji Molina batting cleanup, light-hitting, broken-down Rich Aurilia starting at first base, and the skeletal remains of Ray Durham still roaming the infield at 2nd, this team packs a Glass-Joe quality punch, and the near future does not appear to illume in the city by the bay. The Giants’ lack of offense makes them an iffy bet for over/unders, as oddsmakers are obviously  aware of the team’s noted struggles, and the result are very low over/under spreads sitting at about 7.5 rpg. Aside from Cain and Lincecum, Giants pitching can easily surrender 6 or 7 runs singlehandedly, too risky. Plan on routinely laying money on Giants opponents on the run-line for solid  payouts with the exception of Cain and Lincecum’s starts, and cash in on Sabean’s horrible business prowess.
